THE ROYAL CRUISE

ARRIVAL AT JAMAICA. [Australia & N.Z. Cable Association.] CReceived this day at 11.0 a.m.) KINGSTON (Jamaica) Jan. 20. Working absolutely to schedule, H.M.S .Renown this morning stood in from t’lie Caribbean Sea. and picking up the low-lying palisades threaded through the intricate navigation „ entrance, rounded Port Royal (infamous in memory),.and moved majestically up the sunlit harbour of Kingston* to the anchorage, followed by a Royal Salute from the guns of fh» shore battery, and cruisers of the West Indies squadron, which waited dressed and manned to welcome her. The’’ foreshore of Jamaica’s capital was fringed with the populace, and backed by flagged bouses peeping .through the trees, already flickering in Jhe heat. The stately ceremonial of anchoring never changing, but ever new, went forward apparently effortlessly. The Renown might have been an ancient mariners’ ship, so little movement there seemed whether on Sr>a,rd or through the water. As tile cables roared through the hawsepipes she broke flags, wreathing herself from stem to stem in hunting, while the squadron guns blared out a Royal Salute and the flagship’s Band played the National Anthem, the Renown not answering according to etiquette of the occasion. “Carry on” was the order until official calls began, the first being by Governor Stubbs, Secretary Jelf and Colonel Madge, tile officer commanding troops. They were welcomed on the quarter-deck with a full guard, and paid their respects to the Duke of York. They were followed hy the Ad \|uiral of the Squadron.
