OUTCOAIE OF ASSAULT. PARIS, January 20

Twenty-eight men and women were convicted of assault of Abbe Dcsnoyes, of Boinbon, who was stripped and flogged by a number of persons from Bordeaux, who accused him of wizaruy (cabled on January 25th, 1923) were sentenced respectively to 8 and (i mouths, lined one hundred francs and ordered to -pay Dcsnoyes five hundred thousand lira lies damages. Accused pleaded that they acted legitimately in defence against the forces of Satan. The judge pointed out that the penal code did not provide for such an eventuality.

BRITISH LIBERALS. LONDON. January 19. All- Lloyd George’s efforts to secure the re-union of the two sections of Liberalism are not proceeding smoothly. In consequence of recent comments, Air Lloyd George attended a meeting of the National Liberal Federation, and he promised to hand over such a capital sum as would enable a full Liberal fighting line to he put forward at the next general election, and also to cover the whole of the expenses of the administration of the Liberal headquarters.

The- Committee of the Federation then passed a motion, liv sixteen votes to twelve, asking Air AT via n Phillips, who is Lord Asquith’s nominee, to resign the chairmanship of the Party Or-

ganisation Committee. Tlie “ Alorning Post.” commenting on the meeting says; “Air Lloyd George claims that his offer is unconditional as he says he trusts to the honour of the committee to appoint a neutral committee ; nor is the grant made ill perpetuity, hut only until three months after the next general election.”

It is understood that Air Lloyd George, offered £390.000 for a general election fund, thus enabling all the seats to he contested, plus £40,000 annually for campaigning purposes.

Thence he flies to Santiago De Chile, and on to Juan Ferdandoz. He next flies to Samoa, and then to New Zealand whence he goes to Melbourne, and on to Tokio, Peking. Calcutta. Karachi Arabia, and Somaliland. He flies round Africa by way of Durban Capetown, and the Atlantic Coast and thence returns to Rome.
