A player in such circumstances could oiilv receive the most doubtful welcome in English cricket. I question whether Ponsford should he permitted to participate, despite precedence, when it is obvious his loyalty was to his owii country and those who had done so much for him. Lord Hawke recalled that Lancashire played I’oidevin, MacDonald and Kermode; Gloucestershire played Midwinter and Ferris; while Middlesex played Tarrant, Trott, Phillips and Roche.
