CANTEItBURY NOMINATIONS. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 20. Canterbury nominations for the New Zealand cricket tour are: Page, Cunningham, Oliver, Talbot and Crawford. CRICKET AFFAIRS. (Received this day at 12.25 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 19. Lord Hawke speaking at the annual meeting of Yorkshire Cricket Club, outspokenly criticised the proposed engagement of Ponsford as a topic now hurting tho feeling of Australian authorities. Ho declared it was a great pity that money should be offered to draw players from their own country a.ml international cricket. My sym-
pub]lies are entirely with Australians, who are trying to raise a large sum of ** money to keep him at home. A player in such circumstances could oiilv receive the most doubtful welcome in English cricket. I question whether Ponsford should he permitted to participate, despite precedence, when it is obvious his loyalty was to his owii country and those who had done so much for him. Lord Hawke recalled that Lancashire played I’oidevin, MacDonald and Kermode; Gloucestershire played Midwinter and Ferris; while Middlesex played Tarrant, Trott, Phillips and Roche.
A. team to represent Hokitika Cricket Club against Knnieri at Tvanieri will be selected from tlie following players:—Turner, Twomey, Coulson, Thomas, King C. J.. Griffith, Ferguson Cooper, Daly, "Webster, Thomas, Williams, Boyd. Play to commence at 10 a.m. sharp.
A strong team front the United (Grey) Club will visit Hokitika on the 30th. to play Hokitika Club.
