He was given blood transfusion and operated on, the left leg being amputated. The ship’s officer. Ludemnn Matthews, taxi driver, was committed for trial, on a charge of driving recklessly on January 9th and causing the death of a married woman, Ivy Louisa Boon, aged 31.

According to a return furnished to the Minister of Internal Affairs, poultry was less plentiful in New Zealand in 1926 than in 1922. The latest census shows a decrease over all classes of 209.864. SUPERANNUATION FUNDS. WELLINGTON. January 19. The Government lias been for sonic time looking into the position of various State superannuation funds. There are at present lour such funds in existence and it lias been discovered that various anomalies have arisen in the eourse of administration which the Hon. Mr Noswortliy now announces t|-,v Government has decided shall ho removed as far as possible in order to secure effective co-ordination. Cabinet has therefore appointed what is practically a departmental committee to go into the whole matter. The committee will consist of six members, representing each fo four funds, will Public Service Commissioner and Treasurer, and will report to the Minister iu due

It was stated in the Police Court today that ouite a. lot of trouble was caused by Keith McAlister (21). who pleaded guilty to fraudulently .stating, that lie posted a letter containing £ll t.o H. L. White. Karangahape road. , whereas he did not do so. jS<)nior-Detective Hammond said that licensed had purchased a motorcycle from Mr White, and was in arrears with his payments. McAlister went to White mid complained that h" did not receive a receipt for £ll which he said he posted. Cnmplnint was made to the Post Office, about the nondelivery of the letter containing the money at St. Holier s Post Office. Enquiries made showed that the letter had never been posted. “Quite a lot of trouble was caused nml the officials at, the Post Office came under suspicion.” said Mr Hammond. He added that McAlister was a grocer’s assistant, and that nothing was previously known against him. The Magistrate remanded McAlister until to-morrow morning for sentence. FOUND DEAD. PALMERSTON N.. Jan. 19. A settler. J .R. Tomperly. aged 60 years, farming on Nanesteads Line, Bunnvtiiorpe. was found dead on Ins back in a stream running through his property. This morning the deceased arose early and later when his wife wakened she discovered a cheque on tlie table. Becoming alarmed, a search was made, with the result that deceased’s body was found with a gun alongside and a wound in the head. £IOO FINES. TIMARU. January 19. At the Magistrate’s Court before C. R. o it- Walker, S.M.. A. Huston and W. Karton were charged with keeping a common gaming house and with hookmaking and C. Rloacomhe was charged wuli assisting Karton in the running of a common gaining house. The second charge against the* first two named was withdrawn by the police. All the accused pleaded guilty and were each fined £IOO. Sloaeombe being allowed one week in which to pay the fine.
