.MELBOURNE, January 17

At a meeting the Australian Tennis Council appointed a Committee to watch the form of the contestants in the Australian Tennis Championships at the end of this month and pick a team if they thought it advisable lo participate in the 1927 Davis Cup matches. The Council agreed to permit matches between amateurs and pros, provided the Tennis Associations were placed in full control of the matches and the proceeds were devoted to some tennis purpose. It was decided that Australia vote in favour of being allowed to enter for tho Davis Cup and favouring the Cup being competed for annually.

Tbc Government Statistician reports South Australia’s drink bill from 1911-15 to 1920-21 lias nearly doubled, due to the substantial increase in prices, while during the same period the quantity consumed per head of the population and convictions for drunkenness per thousand of the population decreased considerably. From 1920-2 L to 1925-29. the quantity consumed per head increased only slightly. There has been a steady increase in convictions. For the year ended June, 192(1 the drink bill was £5 7s lid per inhabitant compared with £5 os 2d the previous year, and ICS 19s 2d in 1914-15.
