HEAT WAVE. SYDNEY, January 15. The whole State is suffering from an intense heat wave. The minimum temperature yesterday was 123 degrees at Wentworth. LABOUR POLITICS. SYDNEY, January 15. Mahoney (Labour member of the House of Representatives) has resigned j owing to ill-health. .Mr Theodore (ex-Premicr of Queensland) was selected by the Australian Labour Party to contest the byo-elee-tiou. It is anticipated Mr Theodore will eventually replace Mr Charlton as leader owing to dissatisfaction created by Mr Charlton’s attitude on the referendum proposals, which resulted in the i loss of much prestige as leader, and it is generally thought a majority of the party are only awaiting an opportunity to depose him from the leadership. A BALLOT. SYDNEY, January 15. The Amalgamated Union of Engineers is taking a ballot of. members to decide whether they should empower the district committee to force the metal trade employers to grant tlhem full wages for a forty-four hours week. This decision is in direct conflict with the intentions of the Australasian Society of Engineers which decided against a strike. RAILWAY CAMP SHOOTINGS. SYDNEY, Jan. 10. As the result of a shooting affray in a railway camp near Kyogle, near thee Quenslnnd border, three men and one woman were injured, and seven men were arrested. At least fifty shots wore fired. All of the victims are expected to recover.
