Xichd’as, thi|ry-three, stock agent of Timnru, borrowed a gun explaining he wanted to shoot hares. Shortly afterwards his body was found bv the- roadside a Hind grasping the gun. with a large- hole in liis head. Nicholson, of Wellington, who lost it off Cape Tcrawhiti on Wednesday last when it dragged its anchor while ho was ashore. Mr Nicholson states the wireless description fits his boat in every detail. ADDITIONS TO ZOO. WELLINGTON, Jan. 17. There was landed on Saturday from the Sussex a young elephant and a tigress for tho local Zoo. Tlie elephant will be known as “ Nellie,” and appears to he quiet and docile, and obeys the commands of lier keeper, Shea Arjit Kia, readily. The tigress on the other hand is a veritable shrew. On tho voyage out she was in charge ot the ship's butcher who did his best for her. She responded by taking a few slices, out of his hand when he fed her. Yesterday she refused to gratify public curiosity, by remaining out of view all day.

TWO FIRE. CALLS. WELLINGTON, Jan. 17

At 4.45 p.m. on Saturday, the Eire Brigade received a call to 74 Dixon. St. to a two-storied brick and iron building containing offices and store rooms. It is understood in the first fire the ground floor, and first floor ceiling were damaged by fire, and water. It A\as occupied by Dyes and Chemicals Ltd. The ground floor of 75 Dixon St., occupied by Toledo Scale Coy., was damaged bv smoke, while the contents of the top floor occupied by Excelsior Supply Coy. Ltd. was damaged by fire and water. *’o insurances are available.

At 7.15 p.m. the Brigade was again called to 72 Vivian St., to a two-stor-ied five-romed wood and iron dwelling and shop. The building was unoccupied and was owned hy l l '. Goodwin. The woodwork in. the kitchen was damned hy water, and cutting.

LAMB EXPORT. WELLINGTON. Jan. 17

The New Zchfaml Meat Producers Board has received a cable from its representatives in Australia that 117,899 carcases of lamb were exported from Australia for the fortnight ended 14th January, 1927. A COLLISION. HAMILTON. Jan. 17. On Tirau road near Okoroire a collision occurred on Sunday evening between a motor car and motor r-ylcle and side car. P. B. Smith, butcher of Thames, the driver of the latter had his leg fractured, in two places. WATERSIDE STRIKE. WANGANUI, Jan. 17. A partial strike of waterside workers employed leading the John, occupied this morning and is still in progress One of the watersiders during a lull in operations, left and went to the Union offices to vote and when lie returned in about five minutes, time was dismissed by the wharfinger. Ihe whole of the thirty-eight men then walked off the ship. YACHTING. AUCKLAND, Jan. h ■ 4. yacht race for.the Cornwell Cup will he held 'at Lyttelton on Saturday. February 12th. At Dunedin last year the Cup was won by a Canterbury representative. Challenges have been seift from Auckland.
