Cowhide Creek Bridge, Inter-Wan-ganui, which is being erected by tlio Westland County Council, will be finished this month, and will be a boon to traffic as removing another of the obstacles to motorists ia wet weather. Parker’s Creek Bridge is completed also, thereby overcoming another troublesome crossing when floods prevail. A start has been, made to confine Dry Creek, preliminary to erecting a traffic bridge. The groynes are now in position, to assist in controlling the stream, and are doing satisfactory work. As soon as the material for the bridge arrives, bridge building bv the Public Works Staff will be put in hand. The County bridge party will erect bridges at Cameron’s Creek and Granite Creek on the main south road as soon as the material is received. Zala’s bridge overhaul is also to he done soon. These works will all he a great boon to southern motor traffic.

The firebells rang out alarm on Sunday morning at 10.45 o’clock. The. scene of the outbreak was Davies Brewery on upper Gibson’s Quay. There was soon a large crowd wending their way to the scene, the members of the Fire Brigade under Superintendent Braddon and Deputy-Superintendent Thompson being present in strong force very promptly, hut their services were not required. The fire originated near the furnace, presumably from the ashes. It had caught the wood-work of the wall and ran up the side of the wall and was in ia fair way to cause considerable damage when it was discovered. A water hose was available in the building land this proved equal to the requirements, the fire being out when the Fire Brigade arrived. A portion of the wall lining was burnt through for several yards, so that it was lucky the outbreak was promptly discovered. Some of the staff of the brewery were on the lower floor vat the time. Tlio damage done was onfy to the extent of a few pounds.
