A young lady walking along High Street, Christchurch, yesterday morning was thrown into a state of alarm by the sight of smoke Uniting up from a well-laden basket which she was carrying. An investigation showed that her towel and bathing costume wore smouldering, and considerable damage w'.is being done to a lunch packet. A smoker’s carelessness in throwing down a burning match, which landed in the basket, was said to he the cause of the small conflagration.
Air Fred Smith’s Jazrmnha Band from Christchurch, returned lrom South Westland this morning, and tonight by request will render a special dance programme at Woodstock Hall. Cars will run from town and a number of local people will patronise the function to enjoy the hand again in its final appearance on the Coast. The whole tour of the band lias been a success and greatly enjoyed by the members of the band who are charmed with the district, its scenery and its people.
A young man named Alex Gray, resident. at Blackball, pleaded guilty at Groymoutb yesterday before Air AY. Areldrum, S.AL. to a charge of having, on January 10. at Blackball, stolen a wallet containing the sum of £l3 Os 3d, the property of Thomas Clark. The theft was committed whilst under the influence of liquor. The police stated that £5 had been recovered. The Afngistrato ordered the balance of the inonev, £8 Os 3d, to be paid within a month. He recorded a conviction and ordered Gray to come no for sentence within six months, if called upon.
