AN EXPLOSION. CHRISTCHURCH. Jan. 13. A terrific explosion which shook the whole neighbourhood occurred at the home of E .A. Emmett, a Carrier, of 30 Francis St.. Tlurwood at 1.30 o’clock this morning. The back portion of the bouse was wrecked and the family bad a narrow escape but no one was injured. Asleep while their home was ablaze and awakened just in the nick of time to es.tipe in their night, attire along the top of n verandah Mr and Mrs McKay, of Colombo Street, bad a narrow escape from death early this morning. Their bedroom was on the upper floor and when they were awakened the bouse was fully ablaze Inflow and the flames were roaring up the stairs and cut off escape that way. McKay got through la window and carried bis collapsed wife along the top of the verandah to safety. The house and contents were destroyed. A REMAND. TAUMARUNUI. January 13. At the Police Court. John George Henry Blanche, charged with discharging firearms with intent to intimidate and nullin' Andrew Russell Aitkcn and Agnes Aitken at their dwelling bouse, was remanded on bail at £IOO and one surety of £IOO. for seven days.

The body of Alls Afyrtlc Blackburn of St. Hclier’s Bay, who disappeared from the bank of the AVaipa river at Ngaruawabia on Alonday afternoon was recovered by the police this morning after exoloding gelignite in the river. Thomas Henry Mclntyre, .James Norman Richards, Hector Donald Connolly, and Cyril Patterson, whose denredatinns covered ill charges of breaking, entering and theft, were sentenced by Justice Stringer this morning to three years’ Borstal. A BURGLARY. TE KBIT!. Jan. 13. A daring burglary was committed at Piopio on Tuesday evening, when the Farmers’ Union Trading Company’s branch was entered hv smashing the skylight. Clothing, boots and cigarettes to the value of CS!) were taken, but an attempt to open the safe failed. The burglars first attempted to force the door with a tyre lever. AN ASSAULT. AUCKLAND. January 13. At the Police Court Daniel -McCurdy, aged 50, was charged with attempting to commit suicide and having assaulted Lawrence Crawford. The latter stated lie went to .McCurdy’s place to serve a summons for wages. AlcCurdy accused witness of having stolen some potatoes, used obscene language, and struck witness with an iron bar. Accused denied having used an iron bar except in self defence and evidence was given to support the plea of provocation. McCurdy was in a great state of excitement and had struck himself oil the head with a saucepan. He picked up a sharp knife but give it up without anv trouble. Accused was fined .CIO and costs or one month’s gaol.
