[Australian & N.Z. Cablo Association .] NAVAL OUTLAY, VANCOUVER, Jan. 12. Canada’s duty in the matter of defence ill view of the equal status of all tho oversea dominions, of the Empire was discussed by Mr Bruce, Australian Premier, before a record gathering at tho Canadian Club here last night. Mr Bruce said that he did not presume to dictate Canada’s policy, hut he took a view that “We are all members of the same family. I take a relative’s right to give my point of view.” To those who said that Canada needs no defence, he said: “Either they take shelter behind their member ship in the British Empire, or behind the United States Monroe doctrine. No nation with pride could occupy such a position. SITTING TIGHT. (Received this day at 11.0 a.m.) OTTAWA, January 13. TfJtJmier King refused to comment on the statement made in New York by Mr Coates that the Dominions must assume a full share of defence or accept a position of national inferiority. He was ‘also reticent concerning Mr Bruce’s statement at Vancouver, that Canada must buy more from Australia if the present treaty is to be continued in force. MR COATES.
