Nominations for the election of live members ol the Now Zealand University Council are now closed, with a. total of fourteen. Additional nominees are:—H. IT. Cornish, of Wellington, a one time lecturer in law; A. R. Entriean, formerly civil engineering lecturer of Auckland; P. Marshall, formerly professor of geology in Otago; .1. BANKING RETURNS. WELLINGTON, Jan. 12
Banking returns for the quarter are not regarded as satisfactory. There is ii shrinkage in deposits, while advances Jinve increased subslantial'y. Note circulation shows an appreciable contraction, indicating a lessened purchasing power of deiiMnd on hanks continues. If. is expected rales for money may harden, but care and economy can sei> the position righted. Deposits show a decrease of £3.107.097. The Commercial Bank alone shows a slight incimse. Advances have increased by £2.709,369. tho Bank of Australasia being the only one to show a small decrease. Note circulation was £189,970 less, which taken with the fall in free deposits of £2.058,150 indicated the purchasing power of the community as compared with twelve months ago is £2.213,420 Jess. There is. however, u tendency for 'imports to shrink, which if 'it is continued should soon restore the balance ol trade.

William Lawrence Hooper, stamp dealer, trading under the inline ol A\ ilcox. Smith and Co. was tilled £.>o on one charge and £25 on each ol three other charges, fur having; fraudulently fixed on postal packets stamps already used. Two other charges were dismissed.
A DISTRESSING ACCIDENT. PAHTATUA, Jan. 12.
A distressing accident occurred at Kukanut when Beryl .Alabey (aged 3V years), daughter of R. Mu bey. bail lier arm crushed under a motor lorry. Ihe father was manoeuvring the lorry at Kilkaniii station yard, when he heard a cry and jumped down am! lound the rear wheel lying on the child’s arm. With frantic haste ho moved the lorry up a. pace, hut it was found that the child’s arm "was mangled. She was removed to the Pahialua Hospital where the arm was amputated.
■CHILD'S DEATH. PALMERSTON X., Jan. 12. A coronia! inquiry was held to-day at the courthouse before A. J. Graham, into the circumstances surrounding the death of an infant, tile illegitimate child of Myrtle Feck. Evidence showed tlie child was top weak at birth to take nourishment and died three days later. Robert Findlay Aitkcn (Medical Practitioner, of Johnsonville), in written evidence stated that the post mortem examination disclosed the heart was greatly enlarged, and showing congenial defects sufficient to cause death. A verdict, .that the child died from natural causes with returned.
A FIRE. HASTINGS. Jan. 12. Last night a large brick building in Fussell Street, owned by John Blake, of Hastings, and occupied by K. Ballon and Co., auctioneers, was burnt out to a shell. The brick wall prevented the fire connecting with Joe Fos, grocery, next door. FOUND UNCONSCIOUS. AUCKLAND. January 12. -T.eu Barnard, (27). believed to he from Island Bay, Wellington, was found on -Milford Beach at seven this morning unconscious. Two doctors failced to bring him round and he was admitted to Auckland Hospital at 11 o’clock and was still unconscious at one this afternoon. There are symptoms of drug poisoning.
