FRENCH ELECTIONS

[Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.]

PARIS, Jan. 10. Sixty-three Senators liavo already been elected. They include M. Barthou, M. Perot and M. Caillaux. The state of the parties so far is: Conservatives 2 Republicans 17 Left Republicans 14 Independent Radicals 0 Socialist Radicals 20 Republican Socialists I

Socialists 3 M. Millerand was defeated on the second ballot. The official statistics show that the Cartel of the Loft has gained nine seats and that the Radical Socialists have lost three seats, but the Socialists gained eight seats, and the Republican Socialists two. The Communists gained two seats.

Out of 108 Senators, sixty-seven are elected for the first time, and forty-one are re-elected.

AT. Dcselves (President of the Sci: ate) was defeated.

Before the election, the seats where old members have, been defeated were occupied as follows:—Conservatives 2, Republicans 17, Left Republicans 27, Independent .Radicals 10, Socialist Radicals and Republican Socialists 50, Socialists 2. These seats are now, as the result of the election, occupied as follows:--Conservatives 3, Republicans ID, Left Republicans ID, Independent Radicals D, Socialist Radicals 44', Republican Socialists 2, Socialists. 10, Communists 2. The most sensational results are those recorded at Paris where no Socialist has hitherto been elected. The success of the Opposition was due to the Communists, who voted for Radicals and Socialists .instead of for their own candidates. The Socialists’ success means the revival of the Cartel as between tlie* Radical Socialists and the Socialists, which triumphed in the Chamber of Deputies Elections of 1924. Probably the result will lie that M. Poincare’s majority in the Senate will he dangerously reduced. It is expected that M. Caillaux will l>c asked to succeed M. Dcsclves in the Presidency of the.,Senate. He wifi thus become the head of the Court of Justice which sentenced him a decade ago.
