SAWDUST FOR DAIRY COWS.

In America an experiment in feeding dairy cattle with hydrolyzed sawdust has been made. Sawdust used was cooked under 1201bs pressure with diluted sulphuric acid, which converts a portion of the cellulose and allied substances into sugar. Mixed with grain, 41b a day was given to matured cows. The digestible of the dry matter of this sawdust was -16 per cent, in the case of white pine and 33 nor cent, for Douglas fir. The sawdust produced only slightly less amounts of milk than corn starch, but it took on an average, 2.751 b of sawdust to equal one lb of starch.
