TELEPHONE NOVELTY. NEW YORK, Jan. «. Tho telephone novelty caught the imagination of New Yorkers to the extent hardly anticipated. Hundreds of persons, bank presidents, leadcis of industry, professional men, stage and film stars seeing publicity by using the system and hoping to advertise their business thereby beset the offices of the company by telephone, letters .* and in person. Over sixty journalists I and officials of the company were pro- | vided with ear phones and cut in on the Alurray-Gitford conversation. Numerous photographers took pictures of the scene. Officials declare it is difficult to continue the service when one continent, is dark, due to increased static difficulties. The amendment finally was defeated, despite excited debates, in which Republican leaders denounced the President s message and his policies. MURDERERS SUED. CHICAGO, Jan. 8. Loch and Leopold, the youthful murderers, sentenced oil June 7th, 1925, were sued for one hundred thousand dollars bv Charles Reim, chaffeur, who charged that they criminally mutilated I him "in 1923 before Franks’s murder. The jury was discharged after deliberating for twenty-five hours without being able to arrive at la decision.
