The very seasonable spell of weather which has extended over the holidays and after, has been very acceptable all round. Those conducting outdoor sports had every reason to ho grateful for the kindness of the elements. Picnic parties and holiday makers who had occasion to plan outings of various kinds must also have been pleased with the fair weather experienced over the extended period. The long, warm snoll of weather would he very
acceptable to the man on the land, the friendly warmth assuring a generous supply of fodder. Even swamp lauds have responded generously with ready growth, and feed in. abundance is available for depastured stock. The holiday traffic lias been well sustained both by rail and motor. The long string of private motor cars hearing ear numbers which indicate visitors from all parts of the Dominion, have toured the Coast generally, and particularly into South Westland, where a record number of people were on ilie ice at times. The accommodation in various centres was well filled, despite | special preparations, and there .must j he general satisfaction with the volume of traffic throughout the district. Sonic extra advertising outside tile district was planned for this season, ill fact is still running daily ill. the papers and on the theatre screens of Christchurch. Tt would, he hard to gauge the actual result from this form of advertising. hut there is no doubt, it' lias boon sonic real aid. What lias been attempted might well he extended next year, and in good time a mooting should he held to confer as to results. There would he every justification to extend the advertising scheme to the North Island for it is apparent there is a good field there to operate upon. Advertising is invariably of value, and conducted on reasonable lines, never fails to return its value with overflowing measure. There is so much iu this district worth advertising that to neglect to do so is to throw away a great opportunity for general advancement. There is occasion as there is room for the practice of a good cooperative spirit ill the matter of advertising the district, and it should he continued as actively as funds will allow.
