Advices received here privately from Hankow state that control of the concession was resumed by the British was unconfirmed. The latest naval wireless from Hankow dated last night states the concession is still in the hands of the Chinese military. American women and children are now being extracted. An appeal to the public to subscribe ■£loo,ooo sterling towards Sydney Uuiversitv Cancer Research Fund issued .a few months ago proved a splendid success. Generously backed by efforts of the press, orgtmisation of all descriptions and private munificence it officially closed at the end of the year with £119,000 in hand. Since then it has increased to £123.000 and the money is still coniine in. # With unexpectedly la r<;e funds in hand the latest t.iboratories and apparatus are already in working order ami the nucleus of the staff is at \sork. Nothing now stands in the way of launching the first hit; effort in the proposed wider campaign for treatment of tuberculosis and -in attempt to perfect curative methods. Enormous public interest in the opening of the public trans-Atlantic telephone system between. New York and London duly inaugurated to-day by n conversation between Sir Evcrlan Afttrray (Secretary-General of the British Post Office) and Walter Gilford (President of American Telephone Telegraph Company) after which the service was thrown open to the public. There were so many applications in New York and London to sneak on the first day that a.n extended scheduled time which normally was 8.31) in the morning till 10.80 New York time, continuing until late in the afternoon, an endeavour to take the rush of first business. The cost is 75 dollars on the first three minutes and 25 dollars minimum thereafter, limited to 12 minutes, unless calls are slack.
