SYDNEY, Jan. 3. There were 781 bankruptcies in New South Wales during the past year, against 710 in the previous year. Liabilities amounted to £730,149 and -assets to £353,028. NEW YEAR’S DAY. SYDNEY, Jan.. 2. Tho weather was hue for the holiday, and the New Year was welcomed in the city with the usual amount of noise and harmless horseplay. Numerous {accidents are reported in connection with the holiday road traffic, over thirty persons being injured. WIT E ELI IEN’ S DERB Y. SYDNEY, Jan. 3. The New South Wales League of Wheelman’s International Fifteen Miles Derby (motor paced) resulted: Frank Cony (New South Wales) 1, R. Nicholson (New Zealand) 2, K. Hansen (New South Wales) 3. Cony and Nicholson raced to the finish, Curry winning by forty yards in tueiitcseven minutes, eleven and three-fifth seconds.
SYDNEY’S BIG BLAZE
SYDNEY, Jan. 3. In addition to Metters, seven other buildings were badly damaged by water and blazing brands, some of which fe'.l a quarter of a mile away. It was early recognised that there was no chance of saving Metiers, and the firemen conceutmted their efforts to prevent the outbreak spreading. Hie street in the vicinity is now closed to traffic, owing to the danger of falling walls. SHARK’S VICTIM. SYDNEY, Jan. 3. A hoy named Mcrvyn Allum, aged 13 years, was bathing with other boys at Port Hacking, when ho was seized by a large shark, which stripped the flesh from his leg and lacerated the lower part of his body. An official report shows the population of the Commonwealth ot 30th September last totalled 0.076.432, whereof 3,104.821 were males and 2.971.011 females.
In Tasmania and \ ictoria iemales predominated. The increase for the year was 118,512. New South Wales increased by 49,575, Victoria by 20,571. Queensland 21,800, South Australia 15,807 and the other States showed small increases.
Since 1921 the census of Australia’s population increased by 640,698 whereof 70 ner cent, was an excess of births over deaths, thirty per cent excess of arrivals over departures. The increase represents an average rate slightly above 2 per cent per annum.
BOY MURDERED. (Received this day at 10.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, December 4. During an argument with a number of boys in a street at Darlinghurst, Pierre Moussett, aged 52, drew a revolver and fatally shot George Dunne, aged 15. Moussett was arrested and charged with the murder. It was stated that he had been annoyed by the bovs for some time past,
