With the object of fostering interest in boat racing and aquatic sport generally Ihe i ccontly-foiniod Lake Kanieri Boat* Club held a regatta on Lake Kanieri oil New Year’s Hay, and despite the unfavourable weather, a large number of spectators witnessed a series* of interesting events.
To judge from the interest displayed, and enquiries as to future activities, Lake Kanieri should certainly become a very popular week-end resort, and the public- should encourage the Club to continue what has so far proved an outstanding success, and the keenness of the Club officers and foundation members in promoting and fostering the aquatic sports is deserving of, audit is hoped will receive very generous .support. tu the first event —a motor-boat race over a two-milo course—there were five competitors, and alter an exciting race “The Dorothy” ((.'apt Can trick) crossed the line one foot ahead of “'the Grease Pot” (('apt. Hackell).
Eight boats competed in the second event, ip flat boat race over a-half mile course. Handicapped on Uieir speed qualities, this race also proved very interesting, and was won by -Mr E. Hackell from Air A. Hackell by a length.
A Hat boat race for ladies was the occasion of much interest and excitement. and some of the ladies proved themselves quite export's with the oars, and may be reckoned on to give a good account of themselves if they compete in open events. Aliss Chaplain won the race by two lengths from Aliss Brnssington. The men’s 50 yards swimming race was closely contested, AY. lirassington reaching the pier a bare inch ahead ol K. Park. -Messrs Park, King. Hackell and lirassington gave an exhibition of aquaplaning behind Air .7. N. Robinson’s “ NQQAIE ” at a speed of 29 miles poi> hour. This was an event of more than usual interest, ns it was something unique in Westland, and full of thrills for both spectators and
swimmers. The novelty events had to he postponed owing to the inclemency of the weather, but they will he run off with other events very shortly, and it is hoped that public interest will appreciate the action of tho Club officials, Commodore Buchanan and Messrs Ford, Robinson, and Park- by affording them support and encouragement to continue giving such excellent entertainment as was provided at the opening regatta. The Club has already purchased a suitable Club house and boat shed at the Lake, and, with the near completion of four new speed boats, there is promise of much sport and excitement at Lake Kanieri during the summer months.
