ATLANTIC PLANE CRASH. XKAY YORK. Oct. 1. The animosities which marred the preptu ations for Cnpt. Fonclt’s Transatlantic flight flamed up anew to-day when Col. Harold Hartney, former vice-president and general manager of "the Argonauts, the hackers of the ill-starred venture, alleged that the fatal accident at the attempted start was due to the incompetence- of (.'apt. Fonck. In an allidavit made at the holiest of the District Attorney for possible use before a gitind jury, and which was read at the coroner’s inquest, Col. Hartney stated that he had demanded the withdrawal of Capt. Fonck as pilot on the ground that his retention “would jeopardise human life and property.” When this was refused, lest it would cause bad feeling between Fra nee and the United States. Col. Hartney deposed, lie resigned hi.s position. In his testimony before the coroner Captain Fonck said he had spent 3,400 hours in the air and last April flew a 4-motor Blerint aeroplane. which was heavier than the Sikorsky machine in which he was to fly the Atlantic. He said he had piloted the Sikorsky machine for 22 hours before the fatal start.
