BIG GROWTH OF TRAFFIC
WHAT THE FIGURES SHOW. Since the Otira Tunnel was opened, the volume of goods traffic on the Midland Railway line shows a steady increase. At present there is a decided slump in the West Coast timber industry, but notwithstanding the lack of timber freight offering to the railways, the latest figures relating to the tonname conveyed from the West to the East Coast are well in excess of figures for the oorrespnding period last year. In August, 39,466 tons were carried from the West Coast, compared with 35,309 tons in August, 1925, these figures showing an increase of 4157 tons. Figures for the three weeks of this month also show an increase, as will be shown by the following weekly summary : Week-ended 1926 1925 Tons Tons September 4th. 7793 7485 September 11th. 9620 6695 September 18th. 9691 6848 Coal and timber are the main goods carried by the railways from the West Coast, and it is obvious that th§ steady growth of coal carriage by rail must have hit the steamship services severely.
