The death of Mr Joshua Newell, ail old identity in Greymouth, took place' at the Old People’s Horne early yesterday morning. Deceased, who was 89 years of ago, was a native of County Tyrone, Ireland, and, on leaving the Old Country, went to Sydney, going thence to Ipswich. On arriving in New Zealand, he went to Nelson, coming to Greymouth from there, about 1870, rosiding there ever since. An exploration of the Wallsend mine since unwatcring operations wore completed showed the shafts and underground workings to he in a good state of repair. The various roadways leading from the main drive were also found to lie in good condition. The electric fan and pump are working satisfactory, and preparations are now in progress for the early resumption of coal production after a lapse of 3(5 years. A few blocks of coal which had fallen from the seam in the base of the roadway were brought to the surface on Wednesday. The blocks proved to he very good specimens of bituminous coal, suggesting very little loss in the form of slack. About 3.30 on Thursday morning, savs the Westport “ Times.” while Constable Spence was on duty in the lower portion of Palmerston Street he noticed t'-he cellar of the Victoria Hotel open, and on investigation could find no one in the vault. The constable, however, could detect movements inside the premises and got through a window after summoning Mr 11. Todd, nightwatchman who was on Ids round in that vicinity. There was evidence that someone had been at the till, and oil Mr Jeffries, the proprietor, being summoned , he found the sum of two pounds missing. A thorough search of the premises was made, and Constable Spence discovered the hack door was unlocked, showing that the thief, evidently disturbed at his work, had decamped by this exit. Although a
son roll was made of the backyard and adjoining grounds, no trace of the miscreant could he found. Investigation showed that the burglar had gone down the celler and entered' the hotel through the trap door leading into the bar. This morning Sergeant Fox and Constable Alatr'kes, representing the Criminal Investigation Department made a diligent .search of the locality and premises but no evidence of misdescription was found. Private advice received this morning conveyed the sad news of the death at Hastings at an early hour this morning of .Mrs Searle, wife of Air AVin. Searle, the well kniWn settler of Harihari. Air Searle. who returned about a fortnight ago, had gone north on Monday again as a result of receiving urgent news of Mrs Senrle’s serious illness, 'and was present at the end. The deceased was a native of Ross, and a. member of the well known Atuir family of that township, leaving a number of brothers and sisters in the district. Resides a husband a grown up family is left. Very general sympathy will ho extended to the' bereaved husband and relatives in thenloss. The Follies are coming!
