[BY TELEGEArH PEE PEESS ASSOCIATION. PLUNKET SOCIETY. PAHIATUA, September 23. The official opening of the new Plnnket Dental Clinic ladies’ rest room, a ferro concrete building in the main street, took place tliis afternoon in excellent weather in the presence of a large crowd of town and country residents. The land and building are pilid for, and only about £l5O is- required to complete the payment for furnishing. The total cost of the scheme is about £2OOO. All the money has been raised locally. Disappointment was felt at the absence of the Hon Mr Young (Minister of Health) owing to his illness at Waipukurau. His place was taken bv Dr IV. IT. Watt (Deputy Director-General of the Department of Health). Dr Watt dealt with the development of public health, and also with the humanitarian-democratic work of the Plunket Society. A gold key was handed to Doctor Watt for presentation to the Minister. Various other speakers touched on the Plunket Society’s dental activities. The Mayor, Mr J. D. C. Crewe, presided and addresses were also given by Mrs W -D. Wilson (President of the Plunket Society), Mr E. H. Ransom, M,.P., Mr J. L. Saunders (Division of Dental Hygiene), Mr Samuel Bolton (Chairman of the Pahiatua County Council). Mr J. Godfrey Taylor (Chairman of the Pahiatua District High iScliool Committee)j Dr H. Paterson (oil behalf of the subscribers), and also Mr Watson (architect). The building is very neatly designed and compact, with excellent appointments. It was warmly' praised by the official visitors. After Hie ceremony, free afternoon tea was provided for tlio public at the Forresters’ Hall. In the evening a grand Plunket Ball was held at the Drill Hall. RESCUE OF THE AWARIJA. WELLINGTON, September 2. The Harbour Board received congratulatory messages from the Gover-nor-General, and Marine Minister, in connection with the prompt action taken in connection with the search for the steamer Awarna, and the assistance rendered ; also congratulations to the master and crew of the tug Toia. Tt appears that the local harbourmaster worked out the drift of the vessel accurately, greatly helping the Dunedin, while oil the Tuesday the Toia was actually only 15 miles from the ship. FATAL MOTOR- COLLISION. CHRISTCHURCH, September 23. Francis Janies Holland, aged 39 years, who was injured through being thrown out of a milk earl in a collision with a motor ear, died at the hospital to-night. AUCKLAND, September 23. In a statement, Emanuel said that, in 1924, he had reason to suspect that his managing clerk had got him into difficulties to the extent of £ISOO, hut he was unable to prove anything. Later on he was forced to pay hush money in order that his clerk mould not disclose the accused’s position. Despite the threatened exposure, however. he (Emanuel) had dismissed the man in August, 1925, whereon tho latter took away the books, and he had stated at tho Law Society proceedings that his object was to do the accused as much harm as possible. On an investigation, accused said, there was a shortage of £3OOO to the end of March. 1925. and £4OOO at the end of August, 1925. Oil being refused further hush money, said witness, the clerk wrote tu the Law Society, to the SolicitorGeneral, to certain clients and to friends and relatives, stating that the accused was in difficulties and also alleging that lie (Emanuel) had money in private hanks. This the accused denied. In October of 1925, Dunedin relatives and friends had promised to let him have money if it would save his position. The larger portion had been transmitted to Auckland when Hie letters written to the Law Society bore fruit, alicl he was served with a motion to strike him off the roll, whereon the Dunedin people advised that they still were prepared to pay, but i ! ’'at they would wait the Appeal Court’s decision. Emanuel said that practically the total amount, with the exception of the original deficiency, went in keeping tilings afloat until matters could he satisfactorily settled. CUT HIS THROAT. WELLINGTON, Sept, 23. While walking along Manners St., outside the Grand Opera- House last evening Frederick Sibbe, a builder, aged sixty, suddenly produced a razor from his pocket and running it across his tliroat, staggered along for a few yards and then fell senseless to the ground. _ Dr Morice who was passing at the time immediately rendered first aid to the injured man, who was quickly removed to the public hospital. Latest reports state his condition is not serious. ANOTHER BILLET. WELLINGTON, September 24. The appointment is announced of R. B. Hammond, town planning consultant, of Auckland, as director of town planning under the Town Plannig Act passed last session. The appointmentis for a period of twelve months. VICE-REGAL. BLENHEIM, September 24. Yesterday' evening the GovernorGeneral inspected the B Company cadets on parade, and in the evening attended a masonic function here Her Excellency was the guest of the executive of the Plunket Society and Girl Guides at a musical evening and supper. To-day Sir Charles visits Marlborough College and will afterwards he taken for ‘a run round Awatere District.
