WOMAN SWIMMER FAILS

Remarkable pluck ami endurance was shown by Miss Mercedes Gleitdc, a London lypiste, who gave up her third channel attempt after eleven hours, two 'miles from England. The conditions at first were ideal but during tito night a fog descended and the water became very cold. When the girl was obviously weakening, her friends iasked her to give up, out when informed there was only two miles to go she absolutely relused to leave. She was then semi-conscious and at times appeared to be sleeping, while feebly swiminnig. Owing to the danger that she might collapse and disappear in the darkness, one friend lassoed her arms with a rope as she was about to make a stroke and others lifted the semi-frozen girl into the boat where she recovered after attention. -
