Dunedin and the Awarua have anchored under lee of the breakwater. , UNIVERSITY COUNCIL. AUCKLAND, September 21. The Auckland University College j Council received correspondence front Australia respecting a proposal that j one eminent man of learning should he invited to visit- Australia and New Zealand next year for the purpose of giving public lectures at University Colleges. The Professorial Board reported that the names of AI. Henri Bergson and Sir Gilbert Hurray had been suggested by the New Zealand university authorities. Its own order of preference was that given. The Registrar reported that inquiries made by him in tbe south indicated there was a desire to have the matter dealt with by the New Zealand university Senate when constituted. 'Hie reports were received. 40-HOUR WEEK AVAN TED. CHRISTCHURCH. September 21. A working week of forty hours with no work on Saturdays was applied for by the Dominion motor mechanics, at the Conciliation Council to-day. Ibe minimum rate of wages asked for mechanics was £6 10s per week and assistants £o. A SERIOUS CHARGE. CHRISTCHURCH, September 21. In trio Magistrate's Court. John Colder, of Sproydou, was charged with driving a motor cycle and side chair along Page’s road, thereby causing tho death of Robert AVilliam Alilner. Ilio evidence alleged that tho machine carried four men, including Alilner and that while travelling at an excessive speed it crashed into a motor. Accused was committed for trial. The accident occurred on February 20th. NO SUBSIDY GRANTED. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 21. An appeal to the Government to subsidise funds for relief of unemployment to the extent of ten shillings in the pound was rejected by Hon. Anderson (.Minister of Labour) this morning. The Minister said that the City Council would have to raise a Mm under the legislation passed last session. Government subsidised a lot of tilings but it was not going to subsidise money spent on local work. He was perfectly satisfied that work could be found for the unemployed in towns, at relief work rates.
