The Grey Power Hoard's cable conveying the transmission lines for the reticulation of Riniangn and Cobden, which was laid a few weeks ago under the railway crossing at the approach to Cobden bridge, was picked up last week and relaid a few feet west of its former pqsition. Four letters posted in a guard’s van at Blenheim sixteen years ago have just come to light through the dismantling of the van at Picton workshops, states the Marlborough Press. It. appears there was some defect in the box which allowed the letters to slip into an unobserved crevice. The correspondence lias been duly returned to the senders by the Chief Postmaster. One letter contained two cheques intended for deposit in a Bank at Blenheim. The accompanying note is dated Sept. 3rd. 3910. and at last the mystery why the cheques had not reached the Bank has f>een unravelled. The death took place !on Friday night at the Reefton Hospital, after a long illness of Mr William Stott, a wellknown miner. The deceased, who was a native of Upper Buller, had Ik?oii engaged contracting for mining tinder at J.yell. and for some years was alluvial mining in the Newton Flat district. where in conjunction with his brother, worked a payable sluicing claim. He was also licensee of Newton Flat Acomniodation House. .Sinee that time he had been engaged at various mines in Reefton, both" as timberninn and as a miner, and contracted tile dreaded miners’ phthisis, which was the immediate cause of his death. He leaves a widow and two young sons, and two sisters, Airs Downie, Chert-, sey. Canterbury, and Airs Dighton, Berhampore, Wellington; and one brother, Thomas Owen. The. death occurred yesterday afterneon at the Grey River Hospital of Air Peter Stephenson, who for the past fourteen years held the post of boatman in the service of the Greymouth Harbour Board, prior to which he saw many years’ service nt sen on various vessels. A native of Scotland, the deceased came to the Coast just about thirty years ago. He was 61 years of age, and leaves a widow, one son and two daughters, all residents of this district. The Surgeon-Superintendent of the Greymouth Hospital reports that during the month of August 27 males and 30 females were admitted to the Hospital and 22 males and 25 females were discharged. Two males and four females died during the month. At the end of August, 42 males and 29 females remained and the total under j treatment was 09 males and (51 females. One male was admitted to the Home during August and one male and one female were discharged. One iemale died. Thirty-nine males and six females remained at the end of the month.
