SITTING AT HOKITIKA. MONDAY, SEPTE-ÜBER 20. Before His Honour Air Justice Adams. His Honour took his seat at 10.30 o’clock. GRAND JURY. The following Grand Jury were empanelled:—R. Appleton, A. E. Benjamin, V. W. Bimar, H. IV. Boyce, H F. Cooke. D. Davidson, T. AY Duff, H. Jones, AY. AI. Keecli, G. Lakin, E. J. Lloyd, J. C. Alacfarlnne, F. -McGregor, F. Oliver, R. F. Perham, R. Paterson, W. J. Peck, AY. K. Richards, J. N. Robinson, J. H. Stapletdn, I>. Stevenson, T. J. Stuart, AY. H. Shannon Air Duff was chosen foreman. HIS HONOUR’S CHARGE. His Honour addressing the Grand Jury said there were two cases of serious offences against the person. In the first case a middle-aged man. named Cljnnl Robertson, was charged with carnal knowledge or a girl under 10, and in the second case a mail ■named Smyth was charged with incest, that is carnal knowledge of his own daughter. He thought the Grand .Jury would ltavo no difficulty in coming to a decision in either ease. Tho Grand Jury retired at 10.45 a.m. and returned at 11.10 a.in., with a true bill against Claud Roberston. and a true bill against William H. Smyth. The Grand Jury were then discharged from attendance. The common jury were called and sworn. OARXA L KNOAYLEDOE. The King v. William Henry Smyth, charged with carnal knowledge with his daughter on two counts. Accused pleaded guilty. Air Joyce uppeared for accused. Sentence was deferred till the afternoon. A DEFENDED CHARGE. Tho King v. Claud Roberston, charged with unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under 16 year*, two charges of indecent assault and with attempted cprnal knowledge. Accused pleaded not guilty. Air Park appeared for tho Crown and Air AlcCarthy for the accused. The following jury was empanelled: D.II. Stapleton, AY. Sherman, A*. J. Pfeifer, f" Fane, R. A. Orr, P. Brown, O. J. Fowler, AY. Bnrrowinan, AY. A. Shad bolt, C. Cedcrmau, J. Paterson. \V. Sherman was chosen foreman. The accused challenged J. King, J. Peake, G. Trippner, E. R- P. Ferguson, A. Cederman. Air Park ordered to stand by—P. King, F. Lynch, P. J. AYebb, A. Snell, ,T. J. Morgan, 1). P. Stuart, 'AV. Agnew, 0. Borton, L. Dwan, G. Bansgrove, E. Bawden. All remaining jurors were diseharg'" His Honour made ail order for the Court to he cleared during the hearing of tho case. The Court adjourned at 1 p.m. till 2.15 p.m.
