Mr Alfred Gibbs, of Murchison, while visiting Blenheim, informed an “Express” representative that, as far hack as 1915. a company started diving for gold in the Mangles River, near Murchison, the ordinary type of diving suit being employed, with two men turning the handle of the air-pumping machine. The average depth of water at the locality explored was (ill. and at places the divers descended 20ft. The operations were continued for about three weeks, and were abandoned because not sufficient gold was obtained to pay lor this method of securing it.
