Yesterday afternoon the weather cleared wonderfully after noon the tail of hail and snow stopping and by one o’clock the sun was shining brightly and the afternoon continued fine but cold. The unusual fall gave the community an opportunity of indulging in snowballing and all through the town it was full swing. Bevell Street particularly was a danger zone and passers-by had quite a lively time for several hours. The school children took full advantage and even the teachers bad to fight for the right of passage, the experience being enjoyed by young and old. Last night continued fine and a heavy frost was noticeable quite early. This morning the ground was covered with perhaps the heaviest frost of the winter, the taps and all standing water being frozen. Quite a large number of water pipes burst this morning, the local plumbers being busy for a while effecting repairs.
Signs of a revival in goldmining interests were indicated by the Warden’s Court proceedings yesterday whereat sixteen prospecting licenses for the Teremakau River were granted to tiie Rinm Gold Dredging Coy. Mr B. E. Cranston, the General Manager of the Company, is expected to arrive here about Christmas and important developments are likely to follow. The dredge at Hinm Flat lias a long term of workahead of it in ground proved to be auriferous. There is a suggestion of a second dredge for working the Flat. It so. additional electric power will be required, as also power for the Teremakau operations. It is considered not unlikely, if it is determined to secure more power, that Lake Kanieri will lie tapped for a fresh race carrying a larger volume of water to be conducted probably chiefly by pipes to the power site at Kanieri Forks. These are matters which will engage Mr Cranston’s attention when he arrives here. Tlip prospects for a mining revival in the Okarito district are considered also to be very promising.
