THE WEATHER.

FALL OF HAIL AND SNOW. 'Che weather did not show much improvement this morning. It was a stormy night with a strong southerly continuing. This morning the sun shone out for a few minutes, but the clouds then came, again and there was a. cold rain followed about 10 o’clock with a heavy fall of rain and snow. The streets were soon covered with a white mantle and the young people were soon busy snowballing, mu eh interest being taken in the unusual spectacle, it being some 30 years since there wa.s such a heavv fall here.

Earlier in the day reports came in of substantial falls of hail and snow in the country districts, the fall being general. At Kanieri. there were several inches of hail at 6 o’clock. The sun came out at noon and the snow and hail at once began to melt, hut laid on the ground for a considerable time in the -shade. The fall must have been a full inch.

About one o’clock the hills could he seen but apparently fie fall was not as heavy there was only slight evidence of snow on the lowlying hills.
