The Benedicts’ Ball in the Soldiers’ Hal last evening was a distinct success and was thoroughly enjoyed by the large assemblage present. The hall had been specially decorated and made i very attractive picture, while the floor was in its usual perfect order. The music was in the bands of Mr C. Boss and his capable orchestra, and was all that could be desired. The Ladies’ Committee had made special preparations and the supper arrangements were very elaborate and most complete and were much commended. Dancing was kept up till two o’clock, the hall being voted a very distinct success.

Bishop West-Watson, ill his address to the Synod at Christchurch on Tuesday, referred to the expected return, in .March, of Archbishop Julius. He would receive a great- welcome home and the speaker would value highly his presence, advice, and help. The death of Mrs Bridget Casey, of High St ret, Greymouth, took place on Tuesday. Deceased, who was 76 years <>4 age, was a native of Koscouimon, Ireland, and came to New Zealand 50 years ago. On arriving in New Zealand she went first to Barrytown. thence to J’aroa, and finally made her home in Grcyniouth. Her husband, Mr Patrick Casey, who was a well-known bridge builder, died 16 years ago. She leaves a grown up family of' six, three sons and three daughters, the latter being Mrs A. Church, Wanganui; Sister Mary Berchmaus, Convent of Mercy, Greymouth and Miss Julia Casey at home. The three sons are William (who has three years’ service in the War), Thomas (Waiho), and Patrick (Greymouth).

The School Fair yesterday afternoon in the State school grounds attracted a good number in spite of the unfavourable conditions, and the results are expected to he as equally satisfactory as last year.

The concert and ball in the Kanieri Public Hall to-morrow evening in aid of St. Joseph’s School funds, promises to attract a large attendance. The concert programme is in the hands of the Kanieri Minstrels, while capable music will be provided for the ball.

Dir J. M. Robertson, of Westport, has been advised by cable that his son, John, who won the hoys’ cornet .solo competition at the Dunedin Exhibition, and was runner-up in the championship. lias just won the .cornet solo in -Melbourne, being five points ahead of the next competitor. Besides gaining the gold medal lie was awarded a certificate of merit.

Mr W. Jeffries, County Chairman, will return from South Westland on Friday. The County party had a. rough trip over the Maori Saddle on Tuesday and reached Pnringa to find the liver in llood. The party bad to camp in the roadside hut lor the night, and reached Maintain at midday yesterday. Despite a. rough and trying time the party arc well and enjoyed the experience. The will reach Wailio Gorge to-day. motoring from there next day.

In the Supreme Court at Westport yesterday his Honour concluded the hearing, which has lasted tlliee d.qvs of the Soddonvillo mining appeal, in which T. Dove, appealed against the decision of Warden Meldruni in dismissing his claim for €3.700 damages for trespass, and alleged illegal extraction of coal and also the' W arden s judgment for €1 11 on a counter claim by Morganti and party. His Honor dismissed the appeal with costs and bo reduced the amount alleged on tho counter claim by £3l. -Me A. G. (ottroll, of Christchurch, with Mr Lovell, appeared for the respondents and Mr A. A. Wilson for tJhe appellant.

Last evening the members of St. Mary’s choir met to bid farewell to Miss Molly Dee, who is leaving Hokitika to take nil her residence in Christchurch. Rev. Dr Kennedy spoke very enthusiastically of the good work doneby Miss Dee. both in the choir and in the parish, and very much regretted her departure. On behalf of St. Mary’s choir lie lmd much pleasure in presenting her with a valuable hand-bag, together with the good wishes of all the members. Mr F- Groulsky and Mr (>. M'orniingtou endorsed the remarks of Rev. Dr Kennedy, and wished Miss Dee long life and prosperity. Miss Dee left by this morning’s express for Christchurch.
