WELLINGTON BURGLARIES. WELLINGTON, September 13. 1 The shop of G. Neville Morey, chemist, Hataitni, was entered on Friday night. The door was forced open with an iron instrument. Cash 10s 3d and goods valued at five pounds were stolen. 'Attempts made to force open the doors of two adjacent shops were unsuccessful the same evening. The grocery store of Edwin C. Russell was en-
torn], and it is suggested that the burglaries in the localities wore committed by one gang working with a motor car. Russell had hidden twenty pounds in the till and only six shillings was stolen.
WAGES OF SHIPS’ COOKS. AVELLINGTON, September 14
At the Arbitration Court in the cooks’ and stewards’ disputes, for tlie employers it was stated that since the sitting of the Conciliation Council the parties had agreed that the rate for steerage cook in the Alaunganui and Alakura only shall he Cl less than the rate fixed by the court for ship’s cook. The parties have also agreed that in the clause relating to cargo steamers, the rate for second cook where three are employed shall be £1 10s per month above the rate fixed by the court for assistant cook on cargo steamers.
In respect to the hours of labour at sea. it was pointed nut that the union’s elnims were identical to those made by the Union oil previous occasions, and were again brought forward, notwithstanding the Committee’s decision against them. Arguments against the eight-hour day similar to those heard in the stewards’ case were advanced, and the Court was adjourned till to-morrow morning, when consideration will be given to further phases of the dispute.
