LAST MONTH'S WEATHER

AfETEORO LOGIST’S SUMMARY. WELLINGTON, Sept. 8. The following is the Dominion Aleteorolgist’s weather summary for August : ‘‘August is regarded as the last month of winter in .\ow Zealand. It was. on the whole, dull and showery. Reports vary as to the temperature and its effects, hut the days were generally mild, though frosts occurred frequently at night in many parts of the counter. “The rainfall was above the average over the greater part of the North Island and in Otago, hut was below the mean of former years in Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay districts and in the central part of the South Island on both East and AYest Coasts, which is

rather an unusual occurrence. “An intense westerly disturbance passed in the south on August sth. and 6th. accounting for gales, particularly iti the North Island, and most general rainfall, with snow on higher levels, was reported at this time., “Three cyclones passed northward of New Zealand ori August 10th., 17th.. and 24tli. accounting for some heavy downpours in northern districts. A

westerly disturbance at the dose of the month brought welcome rains to Wairarapa and Marlhrough districts, and in spite of the frequent .showers previously experienced, ended what was regarded as a dry spell. Growth was continuous and mostly favourable to agriculture, particularly in the south. There was a fair amount of wind, with a prevalence of south-easterlies in the North Island, but the conditions were calmer further south.”
