Mention was made specially yesterday of the consumption of butter at- Homo. To-ilav it will he fitting to note New ’ Zealand’s part in the cheese markets * of the United Kingdom. In 1924, New ' Zealand led easily as the chief source ' of supply for British imports of cheese. the value being £6,832.870. Canada 1 came next with £4,681,760 and the imports from oFlier countries were light comparatively. In 1926 New Zealand led, hut only by a very narrow margin, from Canada, the figures lieing, respectively, £6,729,920 and £6,726,182. For some years past Empire cheese has entered very largely into consumption in United Kingdom, and to-day Canada and New Zealand, between them supply nearly five-sixths of the total cheese imports. The Canadian product is increasing in favour, and during the year supplies advanced bv about 250,OOOcwt., closely approaching the New Zealand figures. In Canada at the present time there are over 1,-100 cheese factories, and during last year it is officially estimated that the output cheese reached 176,000,0001 b. Exports of cheese from the Dominion for the year ended March. 1926, amounted to 1,483,335 cwt., valued at 33.718,587 dollars ns compared with 1.269.632 cwt. valued at 24.112,475 dollars in 1024-25. New Zealand continues to be the largest supplier of cheese to the United Kingdom, although during last year there was a decrease in her shipment* to the old country. Cheese ranks very high among the products exported from New Zealand, and for the year 1925. the Dominion’s total shipments of this foodstuff amounted to 1,376,754 cwt.. valued at £5,800.808. as against 1.594.486 cwt.. valued at £7,023,297 in 1924. sumption, 10,353,9501 b. valued nt £363,757 was exported in 1924-25. In the previous fiscal year exports totalled only 3,787,7101 b.; valued at £140,715.
