PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
FAREWELL SOCIAL TO REV. J. W. HAYWARD. (Christchurch “ Press.”) The congregation of the Spreydon Presbyterian Church, Barrington street, tendered a farewell social on Friday to the Rev. and Al.rs J. AY. Hayward and family on. the eve of their departure for Hokitika, from which charge Air Hayward has recently accepted a call. There was a large gathering of friends present, including a number from the City, as well as a few old Peninsula friends. The hall was tastefully decorated with coloured streamers, flowers and pot; plants. The Rev. N. L. D. Webster, of St. Andrew’s. 'hiterini-Afndorator, presided.
The Rev. R. Al. Ryburii, Director of Youth in the Presbyterian Church <>r New Zealand, and a very old friend of Air Hayward, referred to the loss tlhe congregation was sustaining through the translation of their minister. and urged nil to do their part in helping to carry on the work in tlie future. After mentioning his long connexion with Air Hayward, and the good work done hy him. he wished Air and Airs Hayward and family ail blessing in their new snliere. The chairman referred to his association with Af,r Hayward, to the good work he had accomplished in Aknroa and Spreydon, and wished the departing guests well in tlie future. Air !!. Cochran, on behalf of (L congregation, presented Ah- Hayward with a well-filled wallet of notes, and in doing so spoke of the splendid work done by the recipient during his ministry in tlie district and to the regret with which notice of his removal had been received. Air F. McKenzie, on behalf of the Board of Afnnngers. handed Air Hayward an inscribed silver-mounted umbrella and testified to the harmony that luid prevailed at all meetings of the Board, and to the zeal with which the minister had carried out his duties during his term of office.
Afr R. Anderson, treasurer of the church, also spoke of the esteem in which Afr Hayward was held by the officers of the church, and the good work done hv him.
Mrs F. Mackenzie presented Mrs Hayward with a fountain pen and writing cabinet on behalf of the members of the P.W.M.U., and spoke of the high esteem, in which Mrs Hayward was held by the whole congregation, and to the splendid assistance rendered hv her to their organisation, and to all branches of the church.
Mr Hayward feelingly returned thanks for the kindness of the congregation, and spoke in high terms of the church officers and of the liarmoney with which they had worked together. A splendid musical programme was (ontributed hy the following:—Songs, Mrs Stallnrd. Mrs Mackenzie. Mr
Eraser, .Mr Freer. Mr McQmirrie, Mr Samson; recitations, Miss Shier, Miss Mu.sgrove, Mr Voss; pianoforte solo, Miss Pollard; accompanist. Mrs AleQunrrie. At the close of the musical programme dainty refreshments were handed round, after which the singing of “ Atild Lang Syne ” and “ For They are Jolly Good Fellows ” brought a pleasant evening to a close. On Saturday evening Air Hayward was entertained at high tea hy the mein hers of the church Aoung Men’s
Chili in their clnbrooni, and was presented hy the president. Mr W. Shier, with a solid leather attache case, suitably inscribed, as a mark of appreciation of his kindness to the members during Ids term of office as patron of the (Tub. During the evening a number of trophies won during the season hv the various members were presented to the winners hy the departing guest.
