Mr Revan said: “AA’e will need fewer unions, and more union, if the coal industry is allowed to carry on in the next five years in the slipshod manner prevailing since 1921. The same crisis is bound t<J recur. Discipline is needed, not merely jn strikes, but in ending strikes.”
Mr Ben Turner said ho hoped that a general strike would not be! needed again. He added: “The best national strike this, and any other, country can indulge in is at the ballot box, guided by reason, intelligence and humanity.” The newspapers anticipate that’ the Communists will force an immediate discussion on the General Strike. The newspapers continue to give prominence to the difficulties facing Mr Churchill and the.other Cabinet members who are meeting the mine owners’ representatives to-day. The “Daily Chronicle” points out that last April the Alining Association ■submitted proposals for a national agreement based upon a varying district wage. AAJiat was possible, then, they say. is possible now. If the owners are obdurate, then the Government can withdraw-the Eight Hours Act.
