1 Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.] CHANNEL SAVIALAIERS. * PARIS. September 5. Michel, the French Marathon swimmer. began an attempt to swim the Channel from Grislier, or Saturday evening. A strong wind bleu up tuo hours later and Michel was persuaded not to continue. Freyberg. Y.C.. reached the -tCrenoh coast to attempt to swim the Channel on Sunday. LONDON, September 6. Freyberg began his third (ha line 1 attempt from Cape Grisliest, hut abandoned it after a short time owing to the rough weather. Tremendous enthusiasm prevailed at Cologne on the occasion of the welcome to A'ierketter on his return Irom the Channel swim. On behalf of tho municipality the burgomaster Matzeriacb. said if English cliffs received a courageous swimmer unpleasantly, the keen interest and congratulations of' tue whole British press made ample atonement. There was no mention of the fact that the swim was financed by an Englishman and two Frenchmen, but the press comments that the same nionev lavished on nationalising celebrations might have been contributed to aid Yierkatter.
