There was a record attendance of the season at the R.S.A. euchre tournament at the Soldiers’ Hall last evening when eight valuable prizes were played for. Messrs V. Johansen and R. Bell tied for first place with 18 games each, the former w inning on a play-off. For the remaining six prizes there were six players with 16 games each and alter a play-off the prizes were awarded as follows: Mrs Lakin 3rd., Mr C. Outram 4th.. Mr J. J. Breeze sth., Mr I’. Muir 6th.. Mr W. Pascoc 7th.. and Mrs Turner Bth. Supper was then served.
While standing with her back to the fire in the grate at her home on Tuesday morning, the clothing worn by a little daughter of Mr James M’Cann, Leeston, caught fire. The girl rushed out to her mother, who was busy washing clothes, and Mrs McCann, fought hard to smother the fire, suffering severe burns on both hands. Fortunately, Mr M’Cann happened to he in the yard at the time and quickly extinguished the fire on the girl’s clothing, hut not before her shoulders and hack had been badly burned. Mr M’Cann’s hands were also badly blistered.
Disappointment is felt at the Government’s decision to postpone consideration of the tariff as far as it affects the timber industry. An opinion was expressed by Mr I). Beese yesterday that postponement of consideration cf a general tariff revision until next year would be a serious blow to the Dominion’s industrial life. He said that if foreign importations were not checked it would mean the extermination industrially of half the people in the industry, ns already sixteen or eighteen mills on the West Coast had closed 4own. Another merchant said that large quantities of timber were coming into New Zealand from overseas, and the timber was being landed here dressed .and ready for the carpenters. Although there was unemployment in New Zealand, all that labour was done overseas, and money was going overseas to pay’ for it.

Hie Town Clerk, Boss, gives notice of the intention to strike and levy the rates tor the year commenced on -March 31st last. Messrs F. The Hospital Ball Committee will meet at the Hospital Board room on Monday evening at 7 o’clock. All collecting books, donations, ticket money, and unsold tickets must be handed in at the meeting. A team of Birchfiehl (IluEer) footballers played a mixed team from the Excelsiors on Cass Square yesterday afternoon. The game was a very poor one and resulted in the visitors being hopelessly outclassed, the score running into cricket proportions. The opening of the R.S.A. Miniature Rifle Club takes place at the Soldiers’ Hall at 7.30 p.m. on Monday when the president’s prizes will be competed for. The range has now been completed with every possible safety device, and there should he some good shooting after members have had a practice or two. All members and intending member ; are invited to take part in the shooting, which promises to prove very popular.
Air J. APNair, District Railway Engineer for Canterbury and Westland, and Mr K. Simmers, an assistant engineer in the department, have arrived at Greyinouth in connection with the construction there of*the new engine. roundhouse, which will comprise several special constructional features. Operations are commencing immediately. The actual supervision will be done by Mr Simmers.
A Wellington correspondent states.— It may now he taken for granted that there will he no further appearance of the Licensing Bill in Parliament this session. There will be more time to deal with it next session. The Prime Minister leaves on Saturday (to-day) for his own district to devote a little time to his private affrirs. Mrs Coates has already gone north with her children. The session Is expected to end about Thursday.
The wedding took place at her mother’s residence on Wednesday. September Ist, of May, eldest daughter of Mr and the late C buries Glass. Alt. Hercules, to George, youngest son of r e late John and Mrs Deakin. of Ross, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Bruce Adams. Airs Dean attended her sister as matron of honour and Air Charles Glass was groomsman.
