During the past two days people in Wellington have been interested in a red discolouration over wide patches of the water of the harbour. It was suggested that the colour was the sequel of an earthquake in Cook Strait. The true explanation is given by the Marine Department’s biological scientist (Air Hefford). Examination under the microscope shows that the colour Was imparted by minute protozoa which Mr Hefford was unable to identify offhand, but which he thinks may belong to the class which partakes of both animal and plant characteristics. Those tiny organisms, measuring from 1-400 to 1-000 of an inch in diameter, •■are never still for more than a fraction of a. second. In shape they resemble cottage loaves, with a form of brush surrounding the larger end. Almost immediately following death they burst and cannot therefore bo preserved, while they are much too lively to photograph. As they have no eyes, and tumble over and over in their mad dame, it is impossible to fell which is their head or tail. The Rod Sea got its name from a similar discolouration, but that was caused by a microscopic form of alga or seaweed.

What is regarded rit Lyttelton as a record in the grading, sorting and shipping of potatoes was established over the week-end by the firm of W. IV. Toy. An order was received on Wednesday night to re-bag 200 tons of potatoes in 701 b bags for shipment on the Slmw, Savil! and Albion Company's steamer Pakeha, which was timed to leave Lyttelton on Monday evening for Montevideo. The work of grading and re-bagging was begun on Thursday morning from potatoes in two Lyttelton stores. All order was placed with a Christchurch linn for 4000 lings. Delays were caused through the men having to wait for the hags. which were received in relays. A delay of three hours was also experienced on Monday morning because of the monthly stop-work meeting of the watersidcis. Eighteen men were engaged in the work, and the potatoes were oil hoard the Pakeha by eight o’clock on. Monday evening. The vessel left Lyttelton yesterday at. 7 p.m. with 8000 hags of potatoes for Montevideo. Last year the Argentine took several hundred tons of New Zealand potatoes, but tbis year the Pakelia’s shipment will be tbe first and tbe last owing to the lateness of the season. A fortnight ago there were between 25,000 and 3(),0(.v sacks of potatoes in store in Lyttelton. Willi large shipments to Australia and the Argentine and to New Zealand ports, there remain only about 5000 sacks in store.
