PRICE OF FLOUR

FURTHER INCREASES LIKELY. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 25. During the past few weeks there have been several increases in the price of flour amounting in all to £2 10s a ton. The price in Christcfliureh has gone up from £lB a ton to £2O 10s. The first increase was one of £1 and when this was made the price of bread was advanced by Jd on the "Jib loaf. The subsequent increases in flour have not been followed by any further increment in the price of bread, but it is quite possible that if flour goes any higher it will mean another rise in the price of bread. The housewife, who in these days of high cost of living finds it hard to make ends meet, will therefore welcome the opinion expressed by a miller yesterday that it is unlikely that there will be any further increase in the price of flour. Though the opinion was not absolutely a definite one. it was based on information received from Australia indicating that flour on the other side is tending to become cheaper. The price in New Zealand is governed by that at which Australian flour can he landed in this country. A while ago the cheapest quotation for flour was £l4 Lis a ton. but this week cables have been received indicating that it might be possibilie to do business at £ll 10s, or at least at £l4 12s (id. This decrease may seem small, hut it is a decrease, and points, which way the price of flour is tending in Australia.

A baker, who was interviewed on the subject, said that at one time he thought that the price of flour would go higher than it is at present, but now, judging by the world’s market, he doubted whether there would be any further increases.
