■ A DESPERATE MAN. NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 25. Described by counsel as a man rendered penniless and almost desperate through continual sickness, Harry Walter Reid, farm labourer, pleaded guilty to-day to three charges of forging and uttering a cheque for £4 at Levin, of attempting to defraud the Railway Department by making a bogus claim for £BO on account of alleged loss of checked luggage, and of stealing £3 10s the property of a patient at New Plymouth hospital. Evidence on the first charge was heard and the accused was was committed to the Supreme Court. Wellington, for sentence. An order was made removing the hearing of the second charge to Palmerston North. On the third charge accused elected to be dealt with summarily, but the Magistrate reserved judgment, pending the bearing of the second charge and a delivery of judgment on this and the first charge.
