HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES
ALLOCATION WITH LOCAL BODIES A representative meeting of delegates from local bodies in the No 12 Highway District was held at Greymotuh last night to deal with the allocation of heavy traffic lees for coming year. All local bodies from AYcstport to Ross, excepting Inangahua. County Council and Brunner Borough Council were represented. Air H. F. Doogan (Greyinouth Borough Council) was voted to the chair. The Secretary (Air Iveating) of the Distributing Authority (Grey County Council) submitted a statement of the heavy traffic fees collected to date, namely:— Grey-Westland District ... £BSB 12- 5 Kumara Borough 70 7 G Buffer District 281 11 6 Inangahua County 101 18 0 £1312 9 5 The amount estimated to bo collectable for the year is:— Grey-Westland District .. £1.627 i 6 Kumara , - 300 0 0 Buffer -10" (1 0 Inangahua 130 0 0 £2,457 7 6 In addition it was estimated 1600 drivers licenses at 5s would be issued totalling £4OO. The salary of the Traffic Inspector (£260) was allocated follows :—-Greymouth Borough £75, Grey County £6O, AVestlaml County £35, Hokitika Borough. £2O; Ross, Kumara and Runanga. Boroughs, £5 eadli; Cobden. Town District and Brunner Borough, £2 10s each. The cost of the loadometers (£150) was distributed as follows: Greyinouth Borough. £22 10s; Grey County, £35; Westland County, £27 10s; Hokitika Borough £ls. Buffer County £2 5, AVestport Borough £l2 10s, Ross, Kumara, Runanga, Cobden Town District. Bi miner Borough £2 10s each. The travelling expenses of the Traffic Inspector were allocated on the following basis:—Greyinouth Borough, Grey County, Westland County, Hokitika Borough, Buffer County, AVestport Borough, 14J per. cent, each; Ross, Kumara, Runanga Boroughs, Cobden Town District, Brunner Borough, 3 per cent. each. Total 100 per cent. It was resolved to divide the district into three groups and one sub-group with respect to the allocation of the local heavy traffic fees collected; namely: No. 1 Group, AVestport Borough and Buffer and Inangahua Counties; No. 2 Group, Grey County, Greyinouth, Runanga, and Brunner Boroughs, Cobden Town. District; No. 3 Group, Westland County, Hokitika and Ross Boroughs; Sub-Group, Kumara Borough. Each group to arrange its own basis of j allocation. . ( No. 1 Group reported a basis was agreed upon. All- 2 Group reported a basis was agreed upon, Brunner Borough dissenting. No 3 Group agreed to the following basis of heavy traffic fees: —Ross Borough 121 per cent; Hokitika Borough 22i p er ' cent; Westland County 65 per cent. Sub-Group.— lt was agreed Kumara retain £IOO of the heavy traffic fees collected and the balance be distributed ecniallv between No 2 and 3 groups. It was agreed that the Traffic Inspector (Air Sloss) he the general collector. and to ask the Inangahua
County to fall in with this proposal. It was decided to ask the Alain Highways Board to appoint Afr Sloss Traffic Inspector for the main highways of the district. It was resolved not to issue licenses for loads exceeding eight tons, and to resrtict speed of heavy traffic to that set out in the regulations, namely, 2 tons lorries, maximum speed 20 mJos per 'hour; 2] tons and 3 tons, 18 miles per hour; 31. 4 and 44 tons, 16 miles per hour ; 5,5 V 6. 64 tons. 14 miles per hour; 7, 74, and 8 tons, 12 miles per'hour. The’ Traffic Inspector was requested to enforce the regulations accordingly. The suggestion to provide the Traffic- Inspector with a motor-ear was not approved, the matter being left to the respective groups to make their own arrangements for local transport. It was resolved to enforce payment of all outstanding fees forthwith, and to allocate sums in hand according to group arrangements. The Chairman and Secretary wme asked to suggest any amendments deemed necessary to the regulations.
