A well-known Blackball resident, Mr John Gilniartin, died yesterday at the Grey River Hospital from the effects of tho prevailing epidemic. He contracted influenza three weeks ago, and was admitted to the Hospital last week. Ho was only 34 years of age, and was a native of Kilkenny, Ireland, where his father and three brothers still reside. Deceased went to Blackball about seven years ago, as manager of tho Blackball Co-operative Store. Hater he went into business as a draper on his own account.

Last week’s tramway accident in Auckland, when a tram-car was derailed owing to the motorman fainting, has raised the question whether Christchurch tram-cars are fitted with the safety apparatus known as the “dead man ” control, which in circumstances similar to the Auckland case, automatically shuts off power and brings the car to a standstill. Mr Frank Thompson. Christchurch, general manager of the tramways, replying to a question on the subject, stated that all the Board’s new cars were fitted with the “ dead man ’’ control, about twenty of the cars being so equipped.

The death of Mr Stefane do FilippL of Three Channel Flat, on Monday, removes a very old resident of the Bulier Valley, who was very highly respected bv all. The deceased was a native of Italy, and with the late Mr Dellavado settled at Three Channel Flat about 55 years ago. they being the pioneers of that part of the district. Since that time. Mr de Filippi had resided there continuously, having followed the occupation of farming as well as t ini her milling and when the dredging boom was on supplying the dredges with coal Tlic late Mr cle Filippi had bedill failing health for a considerable time past, and had been most devotedly nursed by a daughter.
