When the steamer Maheno was about two hundred miles from Sydney Heads on the voyage from Auckland, a huge swirling patch of water was observed by the Master and officers. The cause of the phenomenon is a mystery. It is considered likely that a submarine earthquake was responsible. Much seaweed was in evidence and there were many sharks cruising round.indicating that in nil probability fish had been killed wr stunned hv the force of the disturbance. To test the theory of an earthquake, the temperature of the J water was taken as the vessel passed through the patch. The reading, however. was approximately (>5 degrees, which was about normal. The patch of broken water extended tor about a mile and a-lialf. The line of demarcation between smooth and rough water was very clear. For a long time after passing. the swirling water could lie seen, indicating the disturbance was not of a temporary ehameter. A .SUICIDE VERDICT. MELBOURNE. August 25. At the inquest on 0, J.
