LEAGUE OF NATIONS.

[Australia & N.Z. Cable Association.] LEAGUE DEADLOCK. LONDON, Aug. 20. I' ight for League of Nations Council seats opens definitely at Geneva on August ,30th, when the Council Re-or-ganisation Commission meets to consider Spain’s demand. The “Morning Post’s” Geneva correspondent says that the reply of the Commission to Spain will be in the negative, and thereafter Spain will either withdraw or accept a comprom-

ise. The British delegation’s instructions will be to support Germany first, but it will bo favourable towards Spain il Germany can he persuaded to tlie latter solution. However, it is considered impossible in view of the action of the Sea ulinaviaii “Woe” who are opposing a ns* additional permanent seat except one for the Germans. Spain’s withdraal. therefore, is believed inevitable. It is quite possible that Lord Cecil's compromise proposal providing for three additional 11011-permanent seats will also he revised in view of the withdrawal of Spain and the Balkans. The “Morning Post’s” Paris correspondent says: “It is thought possible that Oluiera! Primo do Rivera’s claim to Tangier for Spain will he forwarded as a Imsis for bargaining when the matter of the League seats is being discussed.
