Tho Post Office at Royal Oak, on tho Onehunga Road, was broken into and a safe weighing about three hundredweight was removed half a mile away, where it was found with the contents intact, an attempt to break it open having failed. The back door of the Post Office had been opened with a jemmy and an oxv-aeetoiio welding plant had been removed from

garage to the Post Office, where it was used ineffectually in an attempt to bore a hole in the safe.

his state of health, took no interest in the proceedings. Matilda flrodio. a maternity nurse, said she had known the accused and his wife- for the past twelve years. They both seemed very good to- each" other and removed their children. On March 4 witness was called to Page’s house and saw the accused and a constable in tlio kitchen. One of the twin Ini hies was on a sofa, her dress covered with blood and the other twin was in a pram dressed and blood-stained. Their 1 throats were apparently cut with a sharp instrument. Roth were dead. Accused had a wound in his throat. Asked what lie did this for, Page replied: “ T've been ill. my head is bad.” Before Page left with the police lie shook hands with witness' and others, and appeared to lie normal.

CABARET LICENSE. AUCKLAND, August 20.

The license of Dixieland Cabaret was suspended by the City Council for one month, as a sequel to the recent Court proceedings against the management for permitting alcoholic liquor to Tie consumed on the premises. An amendment, for .suspension for tjvn months was defeated on the casting vote of the Mayor.

SIR. J. CARROLL’S BIRTHDAY. GISBORNE, Aug. 20. A representative gathering of native tril:nl lenders and prominent pakelias to-day celebrated Kir James Carroll’s sixty-ninth birthday. The function occurred at the Ancient Alarac of Lady Carroll’s tribe, taking the form of a luncheon, followed by speeches and presentations. Sheaves of telegrams of congratulations from statesmen all over the Empire were received by the veteran New Zealander.

The City Council received tender.* for six hundred tons of steel rails, one from an agent of United States Steel Rails Coy. for £6569, and four British tenders ranging from £8544 to £9097. three of the latter being subject tr the termination of the coal strike and tho fourth by Cargo Fleet Iron Company, England without that condition. The" Tramway Committee recommended the acceptance of the American tender. The Council decided to -accept a British tender, provided there was delivery before the end of the present year.

WOMAN DIES AT SEA. AUCKLAND. Aug. 29. A wireless from the Corinthic says that Mrs E. Diggorv, a third class passenger, aged fifty-four, died on Friday last of heart failure. At the Borough Council Meeting yesterday evening the local Government Loans Board Bill was discussed, and it. was decided to forward the following resolution to the Government: That the personnel of tho Board consist of the Secretary of the Treasury, En-gineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department, one representative from each of the Cities. Boroughs, Counties, Power Boards, Hospital Boards or prefeiably an independent body of experts. AN INQUEST. HAWERA, Aug. 20. At the inquest on the death of E. J.
