£ Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.] CONFERENCE FAILS. LONDON, Aug. 19. Tlio conference between miners and coal owners has broken down. MINERS’ APPEAL. LONDON, Aug. 19. A statement issued by the Miners’ Federation urges the miners to stiffen the resistance to the terms dictated by.the Coal Owners, which mean abject poverty and the scandalous lowering of the standard of living for a generation. It appeals to the public to support the miners, their wives and children. NOT BUDDING. LONDON, Aug. 19. The Conference between the miners and the coal owners lasted I.J hours. It is understood that both sides adhered to the old positions the? coal owners insisting on the eighthour day and a settlement of the wages question according to the economic position of the industry and district agreement, the miners insist-1 ing on the seven hour day and national agreement, and refusing to budge on the question of wages until they had a definite guarantee regarding the reorganisation of the industry.
