The Marine Underwriters have been advised that about seven hundred tons of sound cargo were recovered from the steamer Port Kembla and is being taken to Kingston. A CONFERENCE. PERTH, Augst 18. A Conference of, Statisticians from each of the Australian States and New Zealand was opened under the Chairmanship of the Commonwealth Statistician, Mr Wiekens. Among the objects of the conference are to secure uniformity in the method of collecting, tabulating and presenting statistics and to endeavour to provide that statistics of the Australian States and New Zealand will bo presented in such a way that ready comparisons may he possible.

c. J. He Garis, previously cabled as having committed suicide, then later brought back- from New Zealand, was found, dead in his home, Mglboum*. to-day. The body was in the kitchen, and the gas from the gas stove was turned on. His death, which was due, to asphyxiation, ends a picturesque career. v , He Claris's Inst year’s escapade, when the deceased left a letter suggesting he had committed suicide and fled to New Zealand, from which he was brought back, was only an incident m a varied career. A SUICIDE. (Received this day at 12.25 p.m-) MELBOURNE* Aug. 18. He Garis was engaged in oil boring operations near Morniiigton. He spent Monday night with his wife and fann y at Hawthorne. He returned to Morniiigton and sent a note to a plumber asking him to call at the house at noon on Tuesday where he would hud instructions under the mat. The instructions told the plumber to cut the gas off outside the bouse riml to he careful in opening the kitchen, which would be full of gas, where ho would he found, asking him to communicate with his wife and the police, adding: “I fell down on a big job yesterday and am paying the penalty to-day.” He Garis left a letter to bis wife, on bis body.. He lay on the table with his head in a gas stove and all the jets turned on and the windows down nnd closed.

MELBOURNE, August 18. Three dogs owned by a dog breeder, with whom Mrs Olsen, aged 80, lived, attacked Mrs Olsen while she was alone in a. yard and frightfully mangled her.
