PIONEERS DEAD. AUCKLAND. Aug. 14 Twf) more of Auckland’s links with the 'Maori wars were served by the deaths of Air George Akers, aged 00. and Airs Henry Emson, aged 80. The former was .the oldest member of the Oddfellows’ Lodge of the Auckland district. having been initiated in the Good Intent Lodge on October 10th., 1850. At one time he owned and conducted tho Oxford Hotel, Victoria St., and was also an early contractor in the Auckland district, having formed some of the old military roads during the Afaori war. ATr Akers was District Grand Alaster of Manchester Unity in 1886. Accompanied by her husband, Airs Emson landed in 1861, and was living in Auckland during the second Alaori war, when Air Emson did duty at the Otahuhu blockhouses. Airs Emson remembered the days when Queen Street was merely a broad walk in a gully, and when tea-treo covered the route now taken by Karangaliapo Road.
DUTY OX MARINE' SALVAGE. AUCKLAND, Aug. 16. The barque,' Guy C. Ross, has been stripped, and tho Customs people watched interestedly, collecting duty on certain portions of the gear. Even the wrecked steamer Alanaia was not exempt from Customs attention, portions of the salvaged fittings being subject to duty, when brought to the mainland.,
