The first day of the fifteenth biennial Australian and New Zealand thick and field games championship meeteng was a. clay of records. The Exhibition Ground was in good condition and the weather was perfect, while fifteen thousand people were present. The outstanding event of the day was Lay’s performance in throwing the javelin. The New Zealander was ill wonderful form, cincl his style impressed tbe onlookers. A new Australasian record was created. Hundred A’ards.—Parker (Queensland 1, Burns (New South AAhi.es) 2, Grehan (Queensland) 3. Parker led from the start, winning by a yard. Time 9 4-5 sees.
Three Aides Walk.—Parker (N.S.AA .) 1, AlcAhudo (Queensland) 2, Exelceii (Queensland) 3. Parker won easily by tlirco hundred yards, Cabot who would have finished second, was disqualified in tho last lap for breaking in the straight. The time was 22 mins 21
120 Yards Hurdles.—first heat— Scntt (Now Smith Wales) won from Layeock (Queensland) by two yards. 'Time 16 1-5 secs. Second heat.-—Shir-lev (Now Zealand) won from Smith (Queensland) by a foot. The New Zealander was not extended. Time 16,4-5 secs. Third Heat.—Spicer (New Smith Wales) defeated Brooks (Smith Australia) by two feet in 16 1-5 secs. Final.—Scott 1, Brooks 2, Spicer 3. The winner assumed an early lead and won easily in free style by four yards . 1 lie time was 15 2-5 secs. Shirley (New Zealand) knocked over a hurdle in the early part of the race and he finished last.
Polo Vault.—Shaddock (New Smith Wales) 10 feet 9)- inches, Kroger (Victoria 10 feet 6) inches, Heskinen (Queensland) 10 feet. Arile Run.—Hyde (Victoria) 1, AlcDonald (N.S.AV.) 2, Savidan (New Zealand) 3. Savidan begin to show up prominently, and was leading when the half last lap was completed. Hyde put on a terrific pane, and took the lead from Savidan, who was overtaken by AlcDonald. Hyde increased his lead in the straight and won by eightyards. Savidan was fifteen yards behind. Time 4.33 4-5. Tho time is a new Queensland record.
440 Yards. Tlie first heat ivias won by Carroll (Victoria) from Thomson (Queensland) in 51.4-5 secs. In the second heat. Norman (N.S.AV.) defeated Parker (Queensland) after a valiant effort- bv the latter, in 50 2-5 secs In tho third beat Greban (Queensland) showing fine judgment, easily defeated Hunt (N.S.AV.) in 50 3-5 secs Final —Norman I, Crelian 2, Parker 3. Hunt led to the 220 yards mark, but then he petered out. Norman was scarcely challenged over the last 100 vards. and won by three yards. Abe time 49 3-5 secs is a new Queensland
record. Throwing the Discus.-Thomson (S.S.AV.) 11*2 feet 8) inches, Leins (Queensland) 105 feet Tinohes, Heskinen (Queensland) 100 feet 9* niches. The form in this event was disappou tThroving the Javelin.— Day (New Zealand) 19S feet 71 inches Schmidt (Queensland) 175 feet 31 inches, Heskinen (Queensland) 163 feet 41 meta*. This event provoked great interest. Lav was in his best form and lie excelled his’ previous performance ot 187 feet 7.1 inches, creating a new Australian record. Throwing the Hammer.— Haney (New Zealand) 153 feet 6 inches, Thomson (N.S.AV.) 127 feet 111 inches,
O’Brien (Queensland) 114 feet 4 inches. Harvey who was throwing well was favourite for the event. He created -a new State record. Championship Table:—New South AAhdes five wins, New Zealand two wins, AUctoria pno win, Queensland ono win, Tasmania nil, South Australia nil.
